Elon Musk will host a conversation about artificial intelligence with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) on Twitter Spaces Wednesday night, a congressional aide confirmed to The Hill.
Gallagher and Khanna have previously emphasized the need for balance in the technology, both expressing optimism about its potential benefits while also sharing concerns about the potential risks it poses.
Khanna, whose district includes Silicon Valley, is pushing Congress to enact smart and prudent regulations “to prevent any harmful use of AI that doesn’t stifle innovation,” he said in an April interview. at Semaphore. He also encouraged Democrats to engage with Musk, even if they have a very different view from the Twitter owner.
“I’ve always been with him and I think he’s a great businessman. One of the most talented businessmen in the world. But that doesn’t mean I don’t let him know that I think he’s doing things wrong. , and I don’t agree with him. But I am with him,” Khanna told Semafor.
Gallagher and Khanna confirmed the planned conversation, which will take place on the platform at 7pm ET, to Bloomberg News.
Khanna told Bloomberg that “I’ve known Elon for years.”
“We will examine the potential benefits and harms of AI,” he told the news outlet.
Gallagher described Musk to Bloomberg as “the most famous name associated with AI pausers, those who are concerned about the inherent risk and want to stop.”
“I think that the view of the consensus in Congress or more widely is that we can hardly stop,” Gallagher also said. “I think consciously joining his camp makes sense.”
