The Retire Rich Roadmap is a new five-week newsletter course from The Globe and Mail to help Canadians start thinking about what retirement looks like for them – and what steps are needed to get there.
For five weeks, the newsletter will include practical tips, from figuring out how much money you need to live comfortably to building a nest egg. This course will start you thinking about a life that may be years away but is worth planning for.

What you will learn:
Week 1: What is your retirement age? Doing the math to figure out when you can retire can be a sobering exercise or a pleasant surprise. We’ll walk you through the steps and provide a checklist for when to start thinking seriously about that last paycheck.
Week 2: How much will you spend in retirement compared to how much you earn now. How much money do you need in retirement? We will analyze your cost of living and export the future figures. The goal is to create an accurate picture of what it will cost to keep you clothed, fed, and sheltered.
Week 3: Building your retirement nest egg, piece by piece. We’ll walk through the most common ways to save for retirement, look at some lesser-known options and long-term methods of building wealth in general.
Week 4: What parts of your retirement have you already paid for? Keeping track of how much you receive from CPP, OAS, or employer pension plans can be challenging. Let’s examine the financial programs available for senior retirees in Canada and how much they offer.
Week 5: Binding everything together with the will and insurance. No one wants to think about their death – or spend money to prepare for it. But with taxes, of course it is one of the certainties of life. The last part of the Retire Rich newsletter covers the big “what ifs” and what you need to do to make sure you don’t leave your loved ones a big mess.
