Alcohol sales allowed at downtown plaza, Mill Market

Beer and wine are available in Sault Ste. Marie’s new downtown plaza, and the new Mill Market next door.

The city council agreed tonight to add new areas to a revised version of the alcohol risk management policy.

Both addresses will be considered outdoor facilities, meaning alcohol can only be served in a separate licensed beer garden.

The city will determine the location of the beer garden for each event.

It must be separated from other areas by a minimum of 36-inch high separation.

Alcohol sales are limited to beer, wine, and wine coolers, but low-alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages must also be available.

Hours of operation are from 11 am to 11 pm

sent. The exception is GFL Memorial Gardens and Northern Community Center which has a liquor license for the entire facility.

Sault Ste. Marie currently has nine outdoor facilities approved to serve alcohol.

Here are some:

  • Clergue Park/John Rowswell Park
  • North Street Field/Park
  • Queen Elizabeth Park
  • Park James Elliott Park
  • Strathclair Sports Complex
  • Roberta Bondar Park
  • Ermatinger-Clergue National Historic Site

The city’s revised alcohol policy, approved tonight, now allows extra strong beer with an alcohol content of more than 5.6 percent, and wine up to 14 percent.

Recyclable cups are now mandatory.

In a separate matter, Mill Market announced today that it will change its name and logo when it moves to a new home at 73 Brock St.

It will be called the SOO MRKT Farmers’ Market.
